There is a bit of a gotcha! in Windows XP when you do a file search. XP normally only includes registered file types when searching for files and folders. If you want to be sure that the search is for all files, registered types or not, use the following registry hack for Windows XP :

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex
Name: FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions
<Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

Hi Tom,

Strangely enough, I was using the XP file search last night to try to
find some old code. The code is in a directory on a CD, and I did a search
for "OpenDatabase". The search returned no files. Being rather surprised, I
opened up a couple of the .BAS files in Notepad and guess what! Lots of them
include exactly that phrase! Even the capitalisation was the same. I have
no idea why the XP file search told me there were no matching files.

Has anybody else had problems with this kind of thing happening? Does it
only happen when searching on a CD? Is there any fix for it?

Regards,

Pete.

The answer to all your prayers is "Total Commander".
It's one of those 'can't live without' programs!

Naa, not really FAR is the answer: http://www.rarlab.com/far_manager.htm

This is how a commander clone needs to look like. 32-Bit Console. No stinkin' Windows UI. And you can write your own plugins for FAR.

Seriously, we have both at our company (they licensed WinCommander aka TotalCommander before I joined) and I brought FAR with me. I won't swap FAR for a couple of TotalCommanders. And there are already dozens of impressing plugins available for FAR like start/stop services, view running processes, browse the registry, all within the FAR File pane. Plugins page: http://plugring.farmanager.com/cgi-bin/downld.cgi?Lang=Eng

BTW, FAR is from that talented programmer who invented WinRAR.
