Greetings!

I agree, FAR is a great program. Lately I've been using Total Commander and I've been pleased with its functionality as well.

I too used Windows(Total) Commander.
But at final count has preferred FAR.
Why? He rather suitable exactly for programmer.
Though probably difference between them small. But Far - as Linux.
For it produces plugins(several hundred's) plenty of C++ programmer's.

Regrettably example of the creation plugins in PB I did not see.
Perhaps who is aware of writing plugin for FAR in PB. Or FAR bad known in the world?

Thanks. I downloaded the stable version of FAR (over 3 years old!) and have found many things to like about it. In fact, one of my reasons for purchasing PB/CC was to write a console application which would substitute for Still River Shell, a DOS file manager which I have been using since 1988 and still use under Win2K. "Never got around to it" which is perhaps a good thing.

FAR Manager is "far" more powerful. Lots of keyboard shortcuts, and you need them. The HELP facility is sometimes too cryptic, it doesn't concentrate on what you need to see first. FAR costs $25 to buy (the free eval version lasts for 40 days), but I'm not sure which of the places you can send your money, if any, are still valid.

Valdimir,

Writing plugins for FAR shouldn't be hard.
I've looked at examples that comes with FAR and found that the only plugin.hpp
is the biggest header source code needs to be convert to PB. The rest of files could be
converted via hdr2inc tool written by Kev Peel.
You can download it from here

I do really prefer to work with Total Commander. The latest version is 6.03.
Try search here in source code forum for word 'plugin' and you'll find a plugin code for TotalCmd.

Drop me an e-mail for b_aslan at mail dot ru and we can talk on this issue if you want.

Happy programming!
Aslan.

I recommended FAR a couple of times here. I use it since 1998. We have also licensed Windows Commandor (now Total Commander). And I would never trade that for FAR. By the time Windwos Commander takes to load I've almost completed the job with FAR

You do so much in 0.1-0.2 sec. ?

I always liked Norton Commander's style file managers. I used File Commander (text based like FAR) on OS/2 and then on Windows for quite a long time; also used NC and then Volkov Commander (also a russian NC clone) on DOS.
But then started to use Windows Commander (now Total Commander, as per Microsoft friendly request to drop the former name!), and now it's probably the first thing I load on the PC.

Bye!

Try TrID file identifier! Over 1040 filetypes and counting... ;)
Give a powerfull scriptable Lua interface to your application with PowerBLua
PBTracer - Tracer / Profiler for PowerBASIC (soon!)

With a machine as fast as yours, I probably can do even more

I'm a NC style fan, too. I worked for a company where one half were NC fans, the other half used XTree (a treeview style file manager). Ahh, Volkov Commander. I remember that one. Volkov was the smallest NC clone I can remeber. In terms of functionality DN was a brilliant tool.

I still use Xtree occasionally (I still do some DOS programming), but have moved over to Ztree in Windows.

Jonathan,
FAR is free for xUSSR. Simply it is necessary to enter several cyrilic words in DOS codepage(866) in registration field.

Aslan,
Thank you. But I have not understood the address specified by you.
Please repeat. (b_aslan at mail dot ru)
That? b_aslan@mail.dot.ru ?

Konrad,
But I did not like WinCmd. Think this deal of the taste. I have plugin's for FAR, which paint ASM and HTML syntax. Is(Bes referred) identified "Colorer". Well and any small comfort. The Type to console compiling (Ctrl+Enter). The Menu "Propertyes" files apropos too is present. It is called by special key "Menu" keyboards Win'95 or F11.

Marco,
Similars that Total Commander uses greater popularity than FAR beside programmer's of the forum Piower Basic.

David,
What is a Xtree and Ztree?

===

2 All,
That you will say about copying of the files by means of Windows Explorer? For instance beside(at;by) you CD disk with 1000 files with scratch. Where that on 500 files occurs the error and copying stops. Afterwards you painfilly long can not recall what files and files you marked for copying. I seem this BIG bug in Windows.
Though some will say that itself(himself) Window's one big bug

That's exactly what I said

File managers with a tree approach. Think of them as DOS versions (Xtree) of Windows explorer.
