Brothers in Arms is an excellant game, better than Medal of Honor but I still do not think it is as good as BF2.

Ok!

You convinced me! I ordered BF1942 yesterday!

OBTW, my favorite real-time strategy game is Age of Empires II.

Just ordered a new video card so I'll be able to play 3d games properly

I'll get the demo when I get home.

My favorite game of all time was the original civilisation. I used to play it so much I started to have turn based dreams!

Yeah, I played the demo of Brothers In Arms and although I prefer FPS games that aren't squad based, I enjoyed Republic Commando and Brothers in Arms seemed similar in that squad control was pretty easy. The one thing that initially turned me off on squad based games was controlling the squad wasn't very easy so I usually ended up ignoring them.

I might look at the BattleField series though probably for BattleField 2 I'll have to wait for nVidia to release their newer drivers.

I hope you pre-ordered BF2 and not ordered BF1942?
Although BF1942 is an excellant game.

If you have a GeForce4 card there is a post on www.planetBattlefield.com in the BF2 forums on getting it to work on these cards. My brother had to do this and it worked
Oh, Civilization the original was the best, that game robbed me of many hours of sleep and socializing.

I agree, squad based games are too diffucult to make it fun. BF2 has squads but you do not have to join one or be the commander. I did like being in a squad and not being the commander.

I've so far found four squad based games where squad control was pretty easy:
  1. Star Wars Republic Commando
  2. SWAT 3
  3. SWAT 4
  4. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
I don't mind these squad based games because the squad can be useful and controlling them is pretty easy.

I ordered BF1942 for three reasons:

  1. The price was right.

  2. I felt that I should get experience with this type of game before I go for the big one.

  3. I am not sure if my Nvidia card could handle the job on my thin-screen.

There is still an online community playing BF1942 and some of the addons (road to rome, wwII secrets). Still a great game, graphically better than a lot of the newer ones out now.

Some of the mods are fun, there was a star wars one where you can play a storm trouper with a blaster, that was well done. DessertCombat looked impressive but I found it to have a pertty severe performance penalty for all the nice graphics, also the modern weaponry is so powerful you spend a lot of your time dead waiting to spawn again.

I really got into BattleField Vietnam though, all the new tunnel rules and helicopters and riverboats. The portable mortars etc. Also the weapons were fun, carbine-15, m16, m60, m21, akm, ak-47.

as you can see I'm a big BF fan

Ah.... I remember this game now!

Just downloaded the demo of BF42, seemed very familiar...

Then the light went on, several minutes into playing the game it crashed, "Now I remember!" I could never get the demo to run reliably so I never bought the full game figuring it would behave just as badly.

Been to the Planet BattleField forums and I see that a lot of people are having lots of problems with this game and with BF2.

It's a pitty too, what little I saw looked good...

I'm hopping I won't have these problems when I get around to playing Battle for Middle Earth since I understand it also uses the same engine BF42 used.

I had problems with BF1942 at first too, they went away with the patches or newer nvidia drivers. Same with BF-Vietname too, I remember that glass was not transparent on my PC till a patch came out. (I couldn't see out of the helicopter windscreen)

I think patches were up to 1.62 for bf1942 and they weren't just bug fixes and security patches, some improved sound and graphcs and changed the physics and rules a little too as they discovered a few imbalances as time went by, a couple of weapons changed I think too

Hmm.... maybe for the full game but it doesn't seem like they even bother to fix problems with the demo and unless I can find it real cheap, I'm not going to gamble on buying the full game only to find that I can't run it.

Nope, just checked and the Demo hasn't been updated since 2002, where the last game patch was about 6 months ago... Dumb because I think most people would be like me, if they can't get the demo to work they won't buy the game.

I'll probably gamble, I just found the WW II Anthology which has the original BF42 game plus both add-ons for under $20, if the patches don't fix the problem and EA doesn't have an answer, there's always eBay!

80% discount on what I payed piecemeal for them when they came out.

If you install them all in order the last one will patch upto about 1.51 which has most of the bugs out then just download the last one from the net

FWIW, I made the plunge and bought:
  • BattleField 1942: World War II Anthology
  • Empire of the Ants
  • Freedom Force
  • Bad Mojo: Redux
Add about $4 to $5 each for shipping...

I do love games! It's the primary reason I have a computer!

I'll probably get BattleField: Viet-Nam and BattleField 2 latter, but for now I figure these games will keep me busy...
