The demo for Battlefield 2 is out for those with broadband to download it. (go to the eagames website)

I love it already and will definately be buying the full version on release later this year. BF1942 and BFV were great but this is a whole new step again

The apartment I live in has the building fully fiber'd up and the 550mb download took just under 30mins... now I'm ready to get liquored up and start killing people online

> 550mb download

I'll admit I do not 'do' games or other forms of 'multi-media computer entertainment' at all, but...

Do people really download five hundred fifty megabyte game files?

I think that darn near fills a CD, doesn't it?

I mean, I have DSL (OK, so it's the 'old slow' DSL) but if I see anything over 100 Mb I start looking - hard - for the "how to order on media" instructions.

Yes!
Here now an ADSL from 1.2Mb to 4Mb is common.
One can download a CD sized file in about one hour or less.
Or simply put the file on queue at launch time, and find it downloaded in the evening.
If the connection is slower, the CD maybe an option; but for anything from 256Kb/s. and up, it may simply became a question of a longer download, maybe splitted in a couple of days.

Any way, it's faster and more convenient than ordering a CD, IMHO.

Bye!

Hi Paul,

I downloaded the demo the other night and I have yet to "get into the game". Had some trouble at first but updating the video drivers did the trick.

Over all, I like the new game but I'm still partial to the DesertCombat mod for the original BF1942. I usually put my dedicated server up on Tuesday nights so me and the guys can play a few rounds. Maybe you should pop in some time

I have a 1.5MB DSL and I do download huge game demos if they offer them and for me they better, I won't buy a game unless I can try a demo of it first and like it. Unfortunately some companies haven't caught on, there's currently a couple of games that look interesting but there are no demo versions available...

Had to call the wife Friday when it came out to start the download so it would be done when I got home from work. Had a few texture problems until I installed the NForce 77.30 beta drivers that come with the game. I was afraid to install these drivers but I am getting better 3DMark 05 scores with them and the game runs fine. I did not like BFV and have been playing BF42 since day 1. Played a few games whenever the wife and kids would let me, overall I think the game is very good. Not sure if I like it more than BF42, but I will go out and buy it.

I can understand that, I don't use beta drivers and I also don't use drivers that aren't WHQL certified either.

For Battle field I guess that means I'll have to wait for nVidia to release new drivers before I'll try it if it doesn't work well with the current 71.89 drivers.

I know it seemed strange that EA/Dice would put in beta NForce Drivers in the game. I was getting problems with shadow and ground textures until I used the inlcuded drivers. I such a BF junkie that I did it anyways. I hope you do not have this same problem.

I got turned off on most of these war games because they seemed so unrealistic.

A good example, I recently tried the demo of Delta Force Xtreme, I was on one side of a lake and an enemy was on the other, he started shooting at and hitting me from across the lake (about 200 meters)! Even with binoculars or a scope I could not see him much less shoot him! Obviously I didn't last long and that was easy mode?!! I uninstalled and deleted it after 15 minutes....

I've played a number of other war based game demos that also had a similar lacking of reality.

I play games for enjoyment, not to be frustrated and those were frustratingly difficult even in easy mode!

I do like war games as long as they are challenging but playable, so far the Medal of Honor series is by far the best in that area IMHO.

I found that the nVidia drivers that came with the game were good for me. BFV took me a while to get into after playing BF1942 (I had all the add ons too) but the terrain features were great, you could really get into the foliage and it wasn't just green textured ground.

If you like the DessertCombat mods you will love BF2 because all the DC folks now work for Dice and helped make the game and used their modals. It runs a lot smoother than the old DC stuff though which lagged a lot.

I've only looked at medal of honour briefly and I think Battlefield is a better game, at 200 meters only a sniper is going to be able to hit you except maybe for blind luck. (although an AA gattling gun tends to be rather indiscriminant at any range.

MCM, I think these games are really for broadband, not just for downloading the demo's either. with the last version of their game the service packs that came out were about 130mb each too. if you were playing single player at home then you don't really need the SP's but if you play online you do so every few months you'd have to leave your pc on overnight if you only had a modem. My building has free broadband (just plug in a cable) that shares a large fiber pipe (45mb+ vdsl), I clocked that download to the US (faster for local sites) at about 4mb+ and that was on a sunday night at about 9pm so others in the building would have been using it. Every country has their annoyances to be put up with, in Japan it's not internet service though

Guys, in the US Marine Corps, I routinely put 10 out of 10 in the bullseye from 500 yards with an M-16 and no scope (prone position).

The game's 200 meter shots are VERY realistic. And the probable reason for not being able to see your opponent, was that he was probably lying down while shooting at you. (A person could get tired standing up and killing you).

I'd be fascinated to hear about the realism of BF games from someone such as yourself

Please feel free to output a few screens of text on the subject. I have never fired a real gun in my life (and won't be too upset if I never need to) but it'd be interested to hear about much attention to accuracy goes into these games. the vehicles certainly move well

I haven't fired a rifle in over 30 years, but...

..wouldn't 'dead' also be something you could get if you are standing up whilst firing at an armed opponent?

Maybe, but in this game, where we were if you crouched or laid down you couldn't see anything because of the tall grass and other foilage all around you. So if he is crouching or laying down to avoid being seen he shouldn't have been able to see me and if he's standing so he can see me, I should be able to see him.

I evenutally was able to figure out where he was by following the bullet steaks back to him and seeing the muzzle flash, but there was nothing there but grass (nothing I could kill anyway and I tried).

It soon became obvious that this game was frustratingly difficult even when set to easy difficulty.

Being frustrated isn't my idea of enjoyment, which is why I play games, so I uninstalled it, deleted the downloaded file, and wrote it off as a game not to buy.

Their loss....

Gene,

IIRC, Delta Force Extreme is just a rerelease of the original Delta Force with some graphics made prettier, but still using the relatively old engine, therefore it lacks form all the glitches you mentioned. Try some newer ones and you find those much more appealing. I hate it too if the AI can look through walls, bricks and the like whereas I can't. Talk about cheating...
