I'm not getting a response from the second link - I'll try again later.

I have no argument with the first link's conclusion.
quote:
Conclusion

The more you practice examining arguments for their premises and logical fallacies, the better you will get. I think you will find it is the best method for resolving differences in factual conclusions. It is also helpful in that it can take away the personal emotional content of an argument; if the focus is on facts and logic, the arguments tend to be less personal.

Finally, the most important arguments to examine in this way are your own.

For controversial topics I almost invariably use Bob Scott's EZ-POST. More often than not a post of mine will be subject to more than one edit before posting and the editing is usually because I've reckoned on a better way to say something but sometimes it is because my logic is suspect.

Logical fallacies most likely to produce flames:

Straw Man

quote:

Arguing against a position which you create specifically to be
easy to argue against, rather than the position actually held
by those who oppose your point of view.

Ad Hominem

quote:

An ad hominem argument is any that attempts to counter anothers
claims or conclusions by attacking the person, rather than
addressing the argument itself. True believers will often commit
this fallacy by countering the arguments of skeptics by stating
that skeptics are closed minded. Skeptics, on the other hand,
may fall into the trap of dismissing the claims of UFO believers,
for example, by stating that people who believe in UFO's are
crazy or stupid

Gents, if you want to RELLY know how to argue just tell the wife
that you want a new computer, printer, and 50' plasma screen so
you can play games; and stick to your commitment!

Now THAT'S going to be an argument

Ah... now I'll go read the links.

Don,

You could try RHETORIC, a perfect complement to logical argument.

Logical fallacies most likely to produce flames:

According to a statistical analysis or an opinion?

It is not that easy second guessing people we know well let alone those we do not.

'Flames' may occur in any event but their likelihood may be reduced by simply not presenting a fallacious argument - period.

Don, I have always bought my toys between women - worked for me so far. The secret is to secure the purchases before another one collars you. It is not a lifestyle which would suit everyone, of course.

You think that I am joking, don't you? Well, never intended but fully exploited.

There are some, Charles, but so few that I was never in any danger with my last post. Never considered how difficult it would be typing with my fingers crossed.

Or simply avoid entering the heart of darkness and stay single. Or as the famous quote goes, "Why marry? Just find a woman you hate and buy her a house."

Hmm. This must be one of my more cynical days.
